On December 22 Mars will shift from the Gate of Progress (35), where it’s been creating a potent and confusing emotional soup with Neptune for a few weeks. Does it feel to anyone else like it’s been retrograde forever? And yes it’s still moving backwards, this time into the Gate of Enthusiasm (16), where it will hook up with dwarf planet Makemake in the Gate of Depth (48).
This brings the focus to the Spleen Centre, which will be much more comfortable for a whole lot of people. Maybe you!
When a planet moves retrograde through a gate it starts with line 6, which is the moment of transition. The positive energy of the gate is complete in line 5. When we gets to line 6 the gate's moment is waning, and we must be alert to the uncertainty of what's emerging. The retrograding planet carefully moves us backwards through the gate lines, in a kind of re-do of missed chances we had along the way. It’s as much a retrospective as a retrograde.
In line 6 of the Gate of Enthusiasm (16) the journey ends with realising that our enthusiasm has led us into self-indulgence. We haven’t realised the need to engage with the moment in meaningful ways, and have just shown up to the party expecting fun.
Mars will move back to Gate 16 line 3, and goes direct on January 12. The process is about staying in touch with your own motivation, your own inner enthusiasm, what brings you delight.
There is a split in consciousness being made clear here. There’s a new co-creative responsibility taking form. When we live from this delighted motivation, we are able to flow with a greater amount of reality, by being absolutely present on the ground with all that seeks our participation.
We have to understand Jupiter and Saturn to really get what’s going on here. Jupiter moves from Pisces to Aries this week, the completion of a 12 year cycle of opportunity, and a new sense of faith in where we can go next. In the Gate of Innocence, in 25.2, we are like a wise sage rather than an unknowing child, intuitively responding to a fuller spectrum of reality to create more good.
But Jupiter’s good fortune is built upon the hard work of Saturn, which is in the Gate of Revolution (49). The work Saturn calls from us right now is the courageous daring to leap when the moment calls for it. The key is in the moments when we are not leaping. It is in those moments, when nothing obvious is happening, that we are called to be alert and make careful preparations for what we know (and trust) is coming our way.
In the past we were perhaps overwhelmed by how much life seemed to call from us, but as we shed old trauma, open to new connections, we find a newly unique pathway. It holds the satisfaction of being creative rather than busy.
I'm always fascinated by the complexity of each channel, and it’s interesting to consider what Depth (gate 48) and Enthusiasm (gate 16) might pair up for!
Dwarf planet Makemake, currently transiting in Gate 48 line 1 sheds some light. It tells the story of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and how Chilean people travelled 3000 kilometres across the ocean around AD 500, following the stars to a place they were told was the navel of the Earth. They succeeded in their quest, not because they blindly and enthusiastically followed the voice of their deity, but because of the depth of wisdom and craft they could draw on. They were accomplished sea-goers with a profound ability to navigate by the stars.
This channel is about developing depth through repetition, dancing your way to mastery. It’s also about having the humility to accept that the wisdom of the ages is held within your DNA, and over the next few weeks you are being asked to draw on that knowledge from your own cellular being.
